David Van Biema is a religion journalist. Working as a writer at Life Magazine early in his career, he had the good luck to meet and collaborate with some of the world’s greatest photojournalists. A seemingly minor thing that fascinated him was the number of exposures they made on the way to getting the exact image they wanted. When technology made that abundance available to anyone with a smartphone, he bought one. At first Van Biema photographed still lives that echoed religious iconography. He moved on to an appreciation of the forms, colors and narratives around him just for what they were. Most of his photos are of his familiar geographies: the West Village, the Hudson bike path, and a lake in Maine where he vacations each year. He tries to make them less familiar.

Van Biema’s work has shown at Joe Coffee, Upstream Gallery in Hastings, NY, and at the Hudson Park Library in Manhattan. His current show, “As Seen by the River,” is a virtual exhibit with the Library from April 1 to June 30. He will give a zoom talk about the show at 6PM on April 22.

Prints under 13” x 19” are $200. Over that size: $400. The exceptions are two prints that are limited editions. Contact the artist for further purchasing information.
